Well, you could just sign up with an
Internet-ASP based prenatal system for
about $18 - $25 per patient and not buy an unlimited use annual license for the SmartOB Forms for $29.95. I haven't actually seen the
ASP prenatal forms but assume
they are good.
Or, if you want to access your forms on the
Internet from the hospital or anywhere else that you have Internet access, you
can set that up yourself. Probably the simplest and easiest way to gain Internet
access to your charts is through the service GoToMyPC
.
All you need is for the office computer that houses your patient charts to be
running with a continuous Internet connection. Then sign up with GoToMyPC
and you're done. The cost for this service is about $180 per year. When you
couple that with the relatively puny cost of the SmartOB forms ($29.95 per
year), your total cost would be ~$210 per year. You can perform the cost/benefit
analysis.
Of course, this site is all about practicing as
cost effectively as possible. You don't actually NEED Internet access, but if
you really want it and don't want to pay for GoToMyPC
,
then there is a do-it-yourself (or with the help of a computer professional
since it is more complicated than the GoToMyPC
route)
option out there. First, you need to have a static IP from you Internet Service
Provider (ISP). If you have Internet access in your office, chances are you
probably already have a static IP since this is fairly standard with businesses.
Check with you ISP to make sure. Then you need to have a version of Windows that
supports Remote Desktop Web Connection. This was the "Professional" version in
Windows XP. Those are the 2 critical items that you need. Now you can set up
your PC as a remote host and connect to it through the Internet for free. All
you have to do is follow the instructions
here.
There are probably other choices out there such
as Norton's "PC Anywhere" but this is not an exhaustive review and there will
probably be other choices in the future. I recommend the two options above.
